- A brief bio:
Ranaa Kamal is one of the Empower 2030 leaders. She is currently studying biotechnology at Nile University on a full scholarship. Sustainability has always been one of her passions, and she had the opportunity to represent Nile University at the COP27 conference, where she discussed having effective sustainable practices for an improved world. After her higher technical studies, she worked as a junior teaching assistant and research assistant at Nile University. She also had an internship with Science Street Company, where she worked on projects as a science communicator. All of these experiences have helped her gain experience in the field of biotechnology, with a focus on climate change, agriculture, industrial, and medical applications. She is also a member of the African Biogenome project “Open Institute for Genomics and Bioinformatics in North Africa in the Age of Biodiversity Genomics.” In addition to her specialization in biotechnology, Ranaa also has ample knowledge in other fields, having completed internships in marketing, human resources, and entrepreneurship. She is also actively involved in volunteer work, having volunteered with the Youth Ministry, COP27, and Egyptian Sport. She also played the role of an art guide in the Art D’Égypte exhibition in the pyramids.
- What ignited your pursuit for SDGs especially the goals you believe in?
I was working on projects related to climate change, sustainability, and the environment at the university. The spark came when I was given the opportunity to represent my university at the COP27 conference. It was then that I realized the importance of everything that is happening around us. I am addressing it based on its impact over time, not just the small part that I thought. And that the Sustainable Development Goals are bigger than being limited to climate change only.
- Please share your biggest wins as an SDGs advocate
I participated in many volunteer works in cleaning the Nile and public parks from plastic and using it for recycling. I participated in forming a conference about sustainability at my university and I was one of Empower 2030 leaders.I participated in the Cop27 conference and we held many events there.
- Outside of your SDGs advocacy work, what do you enjoy doing?
I’m a researcher assistant in biotechnology and a science communicator. I also make short scientific videos to simplify science. I also love making videos related to travel and discovering archaeological sites. I was an Art guide and tour guide at the pyramids and was honored by UNESCO. I also used to be a boxing player and have now become a private trainer.
