  • A brief bio:

I’m Shaymaa Bakry, a second-level Sociology student at Cairo University and a fellow at the New Generation of Social Scientists in the Arab Region fellowship by the Arab Council for the Social Science. I’m deeply passionate about driving change, especially in the realms of UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and combating climate change. I firmly believe that change starts with raising social awareness, and I’ve been actively involved in various initiatives to make a meaningful impact. Since 2021, I’ve been a Communications Specialist at Science Land, a Social Enterprise aimed at nurturing students’ skills and knowledge in scientific research, innovation, sustainable development, and entrepreneurship. In this role, I’ve led committees, invited distinguished scientists as speakers, and managed partnerships with organizations to help spread our ideas. In my early professional journey, I worked as a freelance Sales Specialist at Icareer, an online project supported by IBM. During my tenure, I didn’t just meet sales targets; I exceeded them by over 500% and secured three significant B2B deals with Saudi Arabian companies. Beyond my professional endeavors, I’ve been dedicated to academic growth and practical experience. I interned at Mersal Foundation, gaining valuable insights into various departments. I also engaged with organizations like GISR Institution for Survey Research to learn about Quastionnaire Design, Data Collection methods, Report writing in “Qualifying Survey Researchers” summer training. And participated in the British Council’s “She Seeds Change Environmental Education Program.” Notably, our initiative, Nemo’s Navy, was recognized as a top-ten winner in a national competition. I’m not limited to academics and work; I thrive in extracurricular activities. I’ve organized the Rally Entrepreneurship Egypt Competition, participated in the Egyptian Parliament Model, volunteered as an Arabic proofreader for the Daily Dose for Science website, and contributed to the Egypt International Science and Technology Fair. A significant highlight was my leadership role in the “EGYouth4CLIMATE” campaign, where I managed 300 volunteers across 27 governorates to raise climate change awareness throughout Egypt. I’m genuinely enthusiastic about my journey and committed to further learning and making a difference in society. My aim is to play a significant role in creating a positive impact on our world. I’m always ready to embrace new challenges and opportunities that come my way.

  • What ignited your pursuit for SDGs especially the goals you believe in?

My pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) was ignited by a combination of personal passion and academic interest in the realm of Sociology. Being a student of Sociology at Cairo University, I’ve always believed in the power of social awareness and the potential for positive change that stems from it. The SDGs align perfectly with my values, and I have a particular focus on SDG 13 (Climate Action) due to the urgency of climate change issues. This concern for our environment and the world’s most vulnerable populations drives me to advocate for meaningful action and sustainable solutions.

  • Please share your biggest wins as an SDGs advocate

I was CO- Leader at the “EGYouth4CLIMATE” Campaign: I consider leading the “EGYouth4CLIMATE” campaign a significant achievement. This initiative, funded by UNICEF Egypt and supported by the Egyptian Ministry of Youth and Sports, involved mobilizing 300 volunteers from 27 governorates across Egypt to raise awareness about climate change. Our campaign’s impact was recognized at COP-27 and COY17, where we shared our experiences with international stakeholders.

  •  Outside of your SDGs advocacy work, what do you enjoy doing?
